If sowing in late fall, sow on the surface and lightly dust with peat.
If starting early in pots, or sowing in spring, butterfly weed will germinate better if you cold treat for 30 days prior to sowing. Mix your seeds with 1/4 cup of sand and place this mix into a baggie, or plastic container, and add one table spoon of water. Place in your refrigerator (not your freezer) for 30 days. After the 30 day cold treatment place your seeds on the surface of your soil and lightly cover with sand or vermiculite if in pots, or lightly dust with screened peat in your garden as they need light to germinate.
