A staple for zones 1-12 Cosmos are some of the easiest spring seeds to sow and will tolerate some light shade. You can start 6 weeks early in pots but we find they do best if direct sown in the garden in the spring after your last frost. In the spring work your garden soil 6" deep and scatter seeds lightly (one packet will cover around 30 square feet) and cover lightly with peat or compost. We do not recommend you pinch this shorter variety of cosmos, but dead heading any spent flowers will help the plant produce more flowers. Generally they will grow 12" in pots and up to 24" in the garden.
Cosmos makes a great cut flower which usually lasts about 7 days in the vase.
