CULTURE

Soil temperature: 70 degrees fahrenheit
Germination lighting: Light required
Germination days: 10 days
Plant spread: 18"
Plant height: 20'' Foliage
Plant type: Perennial
Maturation days: 50 days

Best started about 30 days before your last frost in the spring. You will get better germination results if you cold treat for 4-6 weeks by placing 1/4 cup of sand or peat in a baggie and adding one packet of seeds and one tablespoon of water. Place in your refrigerator (not your freezer) and and start in pots where you place seed on surface of soil and lightly cover with sand or vermiculite as they need light to germinate. In pots Coral Bells require consistent warmth to germinate and the use of a germination mat is recommended. Once to a height of 2", and after your last freeze, transplant to your garden. After the cold treatment you can also direct seed these in your garden in the spring.

If in cold climates, and starting outdoors, you can also sow in late winter and no cold treatment is necessary. Coral Bells need light to germinate so sow them on the surface of your garden bed and very lightly dust with peat to disguise the seeds from birds.

In the garden Coral Bells dislike high heat and in zones 7-8 it's best to sow them where they get some afternoon shade to help with the summer heat.
