Sweet Peas are best direct sown into your garden soil in late fall in zones 9-7, and in zones 6-3 in the range of 4 to 5 weeks before your last frost in spring. In later winter they can also be started in 4" pots 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost and then transplanted after the frost threat passes.

It's best to nick the seed coat before sowing with a small knife, or fingernail clipper, as they have a very tough seed coating. Another method is to soak them for 24 hours, but we have found the nicking method to work best. When picking your garden spot they don't like soggy roots so pick a spot with high ground. A good alternative would be to build your bed up slightly higher than normal. When the summer heat starts be sure and water frequently. Sweet pea are proficient bloomers and once you see the first buds form it is time to reapply compost with added bone meal to the base of the plants. The last picture in the listing is a 30 day old sweet pea seedling.
