Before sowing we recommend you cold treat your seeds for 30 days. Mix you seed packet with 1 tbs of fine sand and 1 tsp of water in a baggie and store in your fridge (not your freezer) for 30 days before sowing. After the cold treatment let your seed mix dry out and then sow on the surface of your potting mix and expose to light. We like to start columbine in pots and then transplant into our garden in early fall.
You can also direct seed these in spring after your last frost. They prefer sunlight to germinate so till enriched garden soil 6" deep and scatter you seeds on the surface. Cover thinly with sand or vermiculite, or in the garden a very light dusting of peat. They do not like late day heat so here in zone 7 we plant them where they get afternoon shade. Those in mild climates should plant in full sun.
All columbine are slow growing perennials and usually start to flower in their second year.
