For zones 4-9 Ajuga is a very durable ground cover that gives you the benefit of blooming flowers in spring.

You can start these early in trays or pots about 10 weeks before your last frost or you can also direct seed in your garden two weeks before your last frost in spring.

We find you will get a better germination rate if you cold treat these for 30 days prior to sowing.  Mix you seeds with 1/4 cup of fine sand or vermiculite and 1 tbs of water.  Put the mix in a baggie in your fridge (not your freezer).  After the cold treatment sow the mix on the top of your potting mix and do not cover.

These need light to germinate so in pots sow on the surface of your potting material and cover thinly with fine sand or vermiculite if you did not cold treat.  We prefer to use a commercial sterile seed starter potting mix due to the amount of time these take to germinate.  Keep moist 24/7 and do not let your potting soil dry out.  They are very slow to germinate and they can take up to 28 days before germination.

In the garden, after your last frost in the spring, evenly spread using the shaker method and lightly dust with a very light dusting of peat.  Ajuga likes moist soil so a shady spot is preferred during the germination period and once established you can move them to a different spot in your garden.

Ajuga prefers part shade and here in zone 7 we plant them where they get morning sun and late afternoon full shade.
