For zones 5-9 Swiss Giants pansy are best started in early fall by sowing into your garden and then topping with 1/4" of peat or compost.
It's not recommended to start in pots but you can cold treat these for 60 days by adding your seeds to 1/4 cup of peat, and 1 or 2 tbs of water, and placing your mix in your refrigerator (not freezer). After 60 days let them dry on your counter and then sow into our garden in late winter/early spring. These are not very heat tolerant so for zones 7-9 it's better to sow them in the fall.
When direct sowing these seeds, which are very small, it's best to mix your seeds with 1/2 cup of dry sand and distribute them with a small shaker.
