For zones 3-12 cucumbers are a staple in your Organic garden and prefer the heat and full sun. These can be started 2-3 weeks before your last frost in pots (peat pots are recommended) but we find they do best if direct sown in the garden in the spring after your last frost. Wait for the temperatures to be a consistent 65-75 degrees, for a couple of weeks, before direct sowing in the garden. Cucumbers do not like the cold. If the weather turns cold, cover the seedlings. In the spring work your garden soil 6" deep and sow approx. 4 seeds 1/2" deep within a 1 foot spacing. Cucumbers need to have consistently moist soil to thrive. Water the base of the plant not overhead to avoid disease. Use a stake or cage to trellis the 2-3 foot vines.
