For all zones petunia's are best started in late winter by sowing in pots indoors and transplanting in spring. In very mild climates (zones 6 and below) you can also direct sow them in early spring. Be advised petunia's will not take high summer heat and if in hot zones it's best to start them early in pots and transplant. You can not direct sow petunia's in summer when your temperatures are in the 80's or above.
When direct sowing these seeds, which are very small, it's best to mix your seeds with 1/2 cup of dry sand and distribute them with a small shaker into your garden.
If starting in pots use the same method as direct sowing and mix them with sand and sprinkle on the surface of your potting material. Do not cover and keep moist by covering your pot with plastic wrap or a plastic dome. Keep your soil moist by watering from below and try not to disturb your seeds. Once seedlings are about ten weeks old transplant outdoors after your last frost in the spring.
