For zones 4-12 small gourds are a decorative addition in your Organic garden and prefer the heat and full sun. Small gourds can be started 3 weeks before your last frost in pots but we find they do best if direct sown in the garden in the spring after your last frost. Wait for the temperatures to be a consistent 65-75 degrees, for a couple of weeks, before direct sowing in the garden. In the spring work your garden soil 6" deep and sow approx. 4 seeds 1 inch deep within a 5 foot spacing. Small gourds need to have consistently moist soil. As the vines mature, use a layer of mulch between the vines and the soil to prevent rotting.
