For zones 3-9 Hosta are a garden staple that requires very little maintenance and come back year after year. Hosta seeds should be started in pots. They can take up to 30 days to germinate, and grow very slowly, so it's best to use a sterile commercial potting soil mix or use screened peat (mixed with coarse sand or pearlite) as a starter. It is not recommended to direct sow these into your garden.
Press your seed into the surface of your potting mix. You do not need to cover, but can cover with a very light dusting of peat that is under 1/4". Keep your potting mix slightly moist and don't let it dry out. Hosta seeds don't need light to germinate but it is important to not let your soil temperature drop under 65 degrees or they won't germinate properly. When the seeds initially germinate they send up a short stalk with a single round leaf (see last photo).
Once your plant develops it's third leaf set you can transplant into a shady part of your garden.
