For zones 3-12 cantaloupe are a staple in your Organic garden and prefer full sun. Best to direct sow, but you can also start 8-12 weeks early in pots and transplant after your last frost in the spring. Wait for the temperatures to be a consistent 70-80 degrees, for a couple of weeks, before direct sowing in the garden. If starting seeds early in pots, gradually expose the seedlings to the weather for short periods of time before planting in the ground. Melons need to have consistently moist soil. In very late spring work your garden soil 6" deep and sow seeds 1/2" deep and 14" apart when temperatures stay in the mid 70's. Water from the base and not from overhead. Planting at least 2 melon plants for cross pollination is suggested for a generous harvest, but it is not required.
